I would be interested in a support group & respite care.
Hi Lynn! We are sorry to here you are feeling burnt out. We are working on organizing a support group and will reach out to you when it is officially established. We are working hard to establish respite care, but may take a little longer because of funding, so keep up to date by following our social media or signing up for our newsletters.
In the meantime, here are some recommendations to help with burn out;
Exercise for at least 30 minutes for at least 3 times a week- this can be a walk outside alone or with friends, going to an exercise class or working out virtually at home. What are some benefits?
- Increases your serotonin and endorphins
- Increases blood flow and oxygen to all muscles and your brain
- Improves your sleep
Me time- try to get at least 30 minutes of me time every day. This can be while you shower, get ready in the morning or maybe while drinking your coffee. Find a space that makes you comfortable, take your time, take some deep breathes and maybe put on your favorite music. We also encourage performing meditation at least one time a day. There are great apps out there like HeadSpace and Calm that assist you through meditation.
Get help when needed and often. We know this may not be an option for everyone, but when you are feeling overwhelmed or need physical assistance ask a family member or friend. People are a lot more willing to help than we think! You can also use the resources within the community like us or senior centers. Some have daily programs that can allow you to get a few hours of your "me time" or allow you to perform some errands. We are continuing to work on expanding our programs, so keep an eye out for our updates!
We understand our advice above is not going to work for everyone but it is a good place to start. Please feel free to set up a time to talk over the phone about how we can further assist you. We can discuss adjustments in care, your home environment and evaluate if any assistive devices or pieces of technology can help improve your daily tasks. Some examples are; an Ipad to improve communication or entertain your loved one while you complete your "me time". We can also provide and recommend different assistive or transfer devices to improve any physical effort that may be attributing to your burnout.
We hope some of this helps and will keep in touch!
